MotoGP Silverstone, Rossi: Nice surprise, but I haven't changed my mind.

The sun came out over Silverstone, even metaphorically for Valentino. Yesterday, the Doctor was pessimistic, but is 2nd best time today at Silverstone lifted his spirits and even his physical troubles (stomach ache and nausea) disappeared.

“In Austria we had to be fast, but instead things went differently. With the same settings here, I am fast. It has gone like that often this year. On some tracks you don’t have the right feeling and on others everything goes well.”

The English track falls under the second category, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer and Rossi has not changed his mind about what he said yesterday.

“I was talking about the title and realistically, succeeding at making up 33 points on a Marquez who has won 2 of the last 3 races, while I have not even finished on the podium, is hard - he points out - The first goal for me is to ride well and to be competitive. I know that there are still a lot of races left and anything can happen.”

Today he took the first step in that direction, but what did the transformation depend on?

“On one hand, the Misano test helped me, where we worked on electronics and traction control - the answer came - On the other, on this track the M1 works well. Having the sun come out was a surprise for everyone. Riding at Silverstone in these conditions is exciting.”

The Doctor took the best possible advantage of the available time, working with the team especially on race strategy.

“I started well and that will let me focus on details - he explains - I tried both the medium and the hard tyre on the rear, turning 13 or 14 laps with them, and the sensations stayed good, as did the times. I know that others put on the soft as well and I think that for the race the choices are wide open on the 3 options. The important thing will be to get all our ducks in a row in order to keep improving through Sunday.”

Also because he has the usual rivals and they are not just standing on the sidelines watching.

“Right now, Marquez and Crutchlow seem to be the fastest, with Viñales and me a few tenths behind - he analyses - Pedrosa is father back, but he doesn’t seem to be doing badly, whereas I haven’t quite figured out Dovizioso and Lorenzo’s sessions. Maybe they are a few tenths behind, but they can catch up.”
